Basic Rolled Oats Porridge

SERVINGS: 3

INGREDIENTS:
1 c. rolled oats
2 c. water
Pinch of salt

Slow cook rolled oats with water and a pinch of salt until thick and creamy, about 5–7 minutes. Finish with butter, milk or your favorite toppings for a warm, comforting bowl.

OPTIONS:

  • Swap half the water for milk (or oat/almond milk) for creaminess
  • Add ½ tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
  • Drop in 1 tsp butter or coconut oil
  • Use a pinch of vanilla instead of extra sugar
  • Add a date, blueberries or other fruit

Additional sweet addition ideas–

  • Consider adding maple syrup and butter to taste
  • Apple Cinnamon: diced apple simmered with the oats
  • Berry Swirl: frozen blueberries or raspberries stirred in at the end
  • Peanut Butter Banana: creamy, filling and kid-friendly
  • Mix in honey and cream for a simple yet rich bowl of porridge

Savory Oatmeal–

  • Simple but tasty: salt, butter and a soft egg
  • Cheddar cheese and black pepper
  • Use bone broth instead of water. Add in chopped green onions.
  • Sautéed mushrooms and a splash of cream

Texture Upgrades–

  • Toast the oats dry for 2–3 minutes first
  • Add crunch: nuts, seeds or granola
  • Finish with cream (dairy or alternative), yogurt or kefir
